“Don’t Shut Down the UN” campaign launches
3 June, 2006
In response to recent controversy around the direction of UN reform and governance and a rapidly approaching spending cap that some believe could curtail or shut down some UN operations, the US-based Better World Campaign has launched a project called “Resolve the crisis: Don’t Shut Down the UN“.
The campaign, which seeks to avert a “political crisis at the UN”, is based around a petition to world leaders that urges those that govern the United Nations – its 191 member states – to take the steps necessary to ensure that the reform process continues and there is no interruption in the UN’s operations because of a lack of necessary budgetary authority or resources.
The campaign does not take a position on the issues currently in disagreement among Member States, instead simply urging nations to exercise the necessary leadership, flexibility, diplomacy, and cooperative spirit needed to resolve those differences and ensure a strong and effective UN.
To sign the petition to and to learn more about the campaign and the background issues that sparked the disagreement between Member States, see http://www.dontshutdowntheun.org/.
